Saul Bass
Saul Bass was born in 1920 in New York City. He is very important for the film industry as he is the creator of the opening title sequence that are used today in every film. Examples of his work over the 40 years of his career are "Vertigo" in 1958, "Psycho" in 1960, "The Searching Eye" in 1964, "Phase IV" in 1974 and "Good-fellas" in 1990. Saul Bass during his life gained a reputation for being a graphic designer and a good film maker. He was also known for designing posters for the film he released but most importantly and the reason why he is so important for us to research was the creation of the title sequence. He worked for 40 years with some of the greatest film makers in Hollywood. These includes Stanley Kubrick, Otto Preminger, Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese and finally Billy Wilder. As well as making movies Bass also created many different and iconic logos used in modern times. The logos that he has designed became very popular in America and is now used today. Some of the companies that hired him to create logos were AT&T in 1969 for their "bell" and then 1983 for their "globe". He also designed the "jet stream" logo in 1968 for Continental Airlines and the "tulip" in 1974 for United Airlines.

In 1995 Saul Bass closely worked with a women named Elaine Makatura. She was the director of the film Spartacus which was later released in 1960. Saul Bass was the creator of the films opening title sequence. After the film had be released Saul Bass and Elaine Makatura came to marry. After the marriage the work that he completed became a collaboration with Elaine. During the 1960s - 1980s the couple moved away to focus more on filming and raising their children.
One and the most popular film that Saul Bass made the opening title sequence for was called 'The Man with the Golden Arm'. This is an American drama film which was released in 1955. The film was based on the book 'The Same Same Name' by Nelson Algren. The book is based on a story about a drug addict. He is put away in prison and gets clean off all of the drugs. When the man gets released he struggles to cope with the outside world. Saul bass designed and produced the opening title sequenced on the film. This made him very famous as opening titles were a revolution of this time in the film industry. The film institutions liked his opening title sequence as each name was a simple bold and whit text that would appear at the top of the screen.
