Supernatural horror genre Supernatural-Horror – When we use devices or themes which goes against the natural world. This when things happen that no one can explain as to why they happen. This involves individuals having different abilities such as having super powers that other cannot have. It can also be gruesome when the killer starts to kill their victims and ghosts can be included in this sub-genre. There are themes such as demonic powers, witchcraft and afterlife that are included to make the genre much more supernatural other than having it all horror with gruesome killing. They include symbols that are easily noticed that can be placed under the different theme categories. The Exorcist
|
Released on 26th of December 1973 The Exorcist was directed by William Friedkin. It was based off the 1971 American novel called "The Exorcist" that was written by William Peter Blatty. This was originally inspired off the 1949 exorcism of Roland Doe. The word "exorcism" is from the Greek word "ἐξορκισμός" which is the practise of evicting spiritual entities from a body who they have possessed. This ancient practise was used in America in the 1960s - 1970s.
The film had a budget of $12 million and got gross profit sums up to $441.3 million. The film won two out of the ten academy awards that is was nominated for. These awards were "Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay" and "Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing" which were presented to the team at the 46th Annual Academy Awards. Also in 1973 at the 31st Golden Globes awards the film won four awards. These were the "Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture", "Golden Globe |
Award for Best Director", "Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress" and "Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay". They won four of these golden globe awards out of the seven they were nominated for.
The film is 122 minutes long and was shot in various places in America. One location is The "Exorcist stairs" in Georgetown, Washington, D.C, America and another location were many scenes were shot in the basement at Fordham University in the Bronx.
The film had many problems through filming. At first many directors turned down the opportunity to shot the film and then incidents such as the son of the main actor getting hit by a motorbike made many people think that the filming was cursed. The special effects were also quite difficult and also the locations that made many of the film crew ill working in 130°F conditions.
After being released in 1973 The Exorcist was available to buy on video. After an act in 1985 was passed saying that every film had to have a certificate, The Exorcist was removed from all stores that sold it as it never went through the BBFC. In 1999 the film was then re-released because James Ferman retired and his successor Robin Duval took over, then passing then The Exorcist uncut version.
The main plot of The Exorcist is about a mother (actress) and her daughter visting WashingtonD.C staying at an old house. Then a demon released from an old charm possess the young girl called Regan, changing her both physically and mentally. The girl then get violent with anyone that comes into contact with her which worries her mother who then calls on a priest. Father Merrin (the priest) then comes to preform an exorcism on the young girl to release the demon from the body of the young girl. In the end the demon is released and the family return home to Los Angeles.
In this movie I can see that the location where it is set is very scary but should be a place where the characters feel safe as it will be their home while visiting the state. I can also refer from this movie that lots of effects are used to create the supernatural element along with a good possession of a character which people seem to enjoy.

The Orphanage
|
' A woman brings her family back to her childhood home, which used to be an orphanage for handicapped children. Before long, her son starts to communicate with an invisible new friend. '
In 1975 Spain, a young girl named Laura is given up for adoption. Years later, adult Laura returns to the closed orphanage, accompanied by her husband, Carlos, and their seven-year-old adopted son, Simon. She plans to reopen the orphanage as a facility for disabled children. Simon claims to see a boy named Tomas. He befriends Tomas and draws pictures of him as a child wearing a sack mask. Social worker Benigna Escobedo informs Laura that Simon's adoption file indicates that Simon is HIV positive. Incensed at Benigna's intrusion, Laura asks her to leave. She later finds Benigna in the orphanage's coal shed, but Benigna flees the scene. Later, Simón teaches Laura a game which grants its winner a wish. Clues lead the two to Simon's adoption file. Simon becomes angry, and says that his new friend told him that Laura is not his biological mother and that he is going to die soon. During a party at the orphanage, Laura and Simon argue, and Simon hides from her. While looking for him, she encounters a child wearing a sack mask who shoves her into a bathroom and locks her inside. Escaping, she finds that Simon is missing and she is unable to find him. That night Laura hears several loud crashes. Police psychologist Pilar suggests to Laura and Carlos that Benigna may have abducted Simon. Six months later, Simon is still missing. Searching in a Spanish city, Laura spots Benigna who is then struck and killed by a car. The police find evidence that Benigna once worked at the orphanage, and that she had a son named Tomás who was interned there. The children stole a mask that Tomas wore to conceal his deformed face. Embarrassed, Tomas hid in a local sea cave and was subsequently drowned. His death occurred weeks after Laura was adopted. Laura asks for the assistance of a medium named Aurora in the search for Simon. Aurora conducts a seance during which she claims to see the spirits of the orphans crying for help. Laura discovers the remains of the orphans she grew up with in the orphanage. They were killed by Tomás' mother Benigna who wanted revenge on the children that were not blamed for the death of her son. She stored their remains in the orphanage's coal shed. Unable to cope with the situation, Carlos leaves the orphanage. Laura recreates the original orphanage layout and attempts to contact the children's spirits by playing a version of Peek Behind the Curtain. The spirits lead her to the door of a hidden underground room. Inside is Simon's corpse, wearing Tomas' mask. While searching for Simon the night he disappeared, Laura moved pieces of construction scaffolding, blocking the entrance to the secret room. The crashes that night were caused by Simon trying to get out. He fell and broke his neck. Laura takes an overdose of sleeping pills. Dying, she begs to be with Simon again and the children's spirits appear, with Simon among them. Simon tells Laura that his wish was for her to stay and take care of the orphans. Sometime later, Carlos visits a memorial to Laura, Simon and the orphans. Carlos returns to the orphans' old bedroom and finds a medallion that he had given to Laura. He turns to look as the door opens, and he smiles. |
