Title Choices and Connotations
The title we have chosen is called 'Patient Purgatory', because we believe that this title sums up our title sequence. This is the best out of all the titles, that we, Crimson Webb films have created.
'Patient Purgatory' has very good connotations - which pulls the attention to the audience. Purgatory means, a place, or state of suffering inhabited by the souls of sinners; who are expiating their sins before going to heaven. Almost as if they were wiping the slate clean, and starting a new beginning. We want our audience to see these relations from the title to the title sequence itself.
The word patient also signifies a person waiting in a waiting room perhaps in this case purgatory just for the chance to be potentially cured from what has been plaguing them their whole life ; that one fear or regret in our life that we want to change. We know that everyone has experience this so our title sequence would therefore relate to many people especially on not just for a film viewing but for the rest of their lives. Perhaps inspiring them to face their fears even if the going gets tough...really tough... as at Churchdown Asylum all nightmares appear real.
Crimson Webb films has researched many different titles and what the connotations are and how they are presented.
'The Ring' This title is unique as it has a lot of connotations that can interest people in this genre of horror. As a ring you would associate with a connection with someone or something.
Suggesting that this connection is one that cannot be broken and the only way you can survive is by breaking the cycle of infinity that a ring produced due to the circular shape which is shown on the left on the advertising cover.
The font of 'The Ring' suggests an element of uncertainity like the person who wrote it was very child-like as the handwriting is very basic. But never the less as it does look like handwriting it makes the title again seem a lot more personal to the audience. The use of white font contrasts with the black background which shows that things are only seen in 'black and white' so to speak so it makes the story/plot seem that there is a lot more at risk not just dying but perhaps even the entirety of reality itself.
Cameron's Closet is also a very interesting title which draws the audience in as the use of the name Cameron suggests that the main character is very sophisticated and knowledgeable for his age and yet he is still scared of something.
The word 'closet' again shows that perhaps the monster or creature that is behind the terror perhaps lives in his closet. Although you could also suggest that closet suggest that the atmosphere and/or the setting will be claustrophobic. The font used for the title is very rigid and in some of the corners of the letters quite sharp again suggesting a connotation of pain and wounding with sharp instruments such as knifes and daggers. The letters seem to be scratched or marked again leaving a scar on the lettering showing that this unknown force/threat may be experienced against the protagonist. This excites the audience which draws the reader in to the plot itself. |
