The Ring was directed by Gore Verbinski and stared Naomi Watts. The film had a production budget of $48 million and made a gross profit of $249 million. Overall the critics reviews on the film were positive due to visuals over gore, the directions over the screenplay and reliance on dread. The problem that the critics did not like were the character development through the film. As the film had good reviews and made one of the highest gross profits of horror films of all time two more were produced. These were 'The Ring Two' which was released in 2005 and 'Ring' which was released in 2016. The Ring is a very important film to horror history as it was one of the first American remakes of a Japanese horror film. This then encouraged other American film makers to redevelop and remake Japanese horror films. Some of these films are 'Dark Waters', 'Pulse', 'One Missed Call' and 'The Grudge'.
