Location Choices and Pictures
We Crimson Webb films chose Churchdown School Academy as the grounds for our filming, because (with the upmost respect) the exterior of the school is much like a run-down mental facility which is what we envisioned for our title sequence and it is therefore able to carry the start of the plot forward.
We chose four particular areas of the school to shoot our title sequence as we believed these areas out the best areas to film, because each of the areas has potential for variation of camera angles and techniques, but at the same time all the areas have similar structure and it does not feel disjointed.
The different sections also play a significant part in the introduction of the film ,( Patient Purgatory) during the Title Sequence this to the audience perspective makes it a whole lot more realistic.
These are the four sections of the School Ground that we decided on.
- Reception
- The Main Corridors
- Back road of the School
- P.E Equipment Storage Room
Reception
We Crimson Webb films chose the Churchdown School Academy Reception to film in for our title sequence due to the fact that the setting is a Mental Facility and we thought that the Reception would be a great place to start and introduce the receptionist also a doctor in the facility played by Jordan Ferneyhough.
His pleasant and laid back personality we thought was perfect opportunity which compliments the sophisticated Reception building; this in turn makes the audience feel suspiciously safe which makes the audience question the Reception and the entire facilities safety .
Also, the Reception has many routes and exits out into the facility giving the audience a flavour of the Mental Facility. The camera angles and techniques can vary smoothly in this area so we can adapt our title sequence opening moments with little issue, as it is practical to our shooting schedule. The Reception gives a first impression of the facility but this first impression as the audience will find out is incredibly deceiving.
Corridors
The corridors we have also considered for filming our title sequence as we like the limiting colours of the corridors which gives it more of a organised feel.
This organised feel we think matches the setting for a facility very well. We are also able to explore the facility, which gives the audience a bit of content to the plot of the story.
The doors that lead to classrooms in the main block we can use to create an atmosphere of claustrophobia showing how the patient could not escape their facility rooms hence driven completely insane.
We may use the corridors more so for our film trailer but we are still going to film some clips in the corridors never the less; but we may include a scene if we have extra time available to the title sequence.
Back Road of the School
The backroad of the School we have used in our title sequence and a lot of the time is spend in this particular location. We have used this location, because of the surrounding structure of the outer buildings being very industrial and fairly old and rundown. This gives the audience a sense that someone or something is watching the protagonists in the title sequence.
The overarching buildings also darkens the road which even in the day has an effect of low-key lighting which suggests to the audience that this facility has supernatural elements that our buried inside its walls, which is later shown due to the distinct change in the time of the day towards the end of the title sequence making the audience feel nervous and scared. Towards the other side there is also a tree and a large patch of grass on its own on the other side of the road; this with the windows facing the road from the side with the buildings, creates an aura of dread as the contrast of nature and industrial is similar to the contrast of life and death.
The back road is symbolic of the journey of life as the Doctor ( Jon Mann) and Agent Lynch ( Brandon Hibberd), unknowingly face their doom.
P.E Equipment Storage Room
Finally, we decided to use the P.E Equipment Storage Room to contain the new mental patient, which has been responsible for many of the troubles at the facility. The Storage Room is what we imagined the patient's room to be like; lacking basic features of a patient's room due to the danger that this patient can inflict with objects.
The room is very damp and even more claustrophobic in contrast to the reception and other areas of the facility. The camera angles and techniques we can vary in this room positioning the camera in different areas to give the audience more of an atmospheric feel of sick and disgust. As the screams our actors/actresses produced in this section are able to be enhanced due to the enclosed space that can carry the sound.
Locations we considered for Filming
Forest of Dean
Forest of Dean
We love the outside scenery that the Forest of Dean contains, however we ultimately did not choose this for filming for our title sequence as we would not have a secure shooting schedule which may have led to rushed filming and ultimately would have consequently a title sequence that is not to our best standard. Also, we did not want to complicate the plot by the diverse change in scenery from Churchdown School to the Forest of Dean. We may however consider filming here in the future, because of the trees in a lot of the areas are very close together which would meet our claustrophobic theme.
Painswick Beacon
Painswick Beacon is a very interesting and unique place we and the filming crew really liked the variation of slopes and the beacon on the top of the highest slope which we thought could have represented the horror rituals taking place which could be nearby the facility. We thought the city in the background at night time would have a nice contrast with the low key lighting. The slopes also would have given us a massive variation of angles and lot of ground to work with.
However, our shooting schedule would also be compromised to film here and would risk a shortage of clips. However we may consider this location to film for our trailer if our shooting schedule is flexible thought ot go to places such as Painswick Beacon. Furthermore, we did not want a sense of confusion in our title sequence we wanted to keep it in the same location so the audience are more able to understand the beginning of the plot and the introduction to the film ' Patient Purgatory'.
